Sishugram Children’s Village was established way back in 1975, under the aegis of the Assam State Flood Relief Committee, to house children orphaned or made destitute by floods. It was registered as a charitable trust called the Sishugram Trust, whose founding Chairman was the then Chief Minister Sarat Chandra Sinha. It moved to its present permanent location in North Guwahati in 1982 on land allotted by the government. Smti. Renuka Devi Barkataki was the Chairman of the Trust for a very long period till her demise in 2017.
Presently Sishugram is a recognised ‘Child Care Institute’ as a home only for orphaned or destitute girls between the ages of 6 and 18 years. The day to day management is taken care of by the Sishugram Local Managing Committee (SLMC) under the guidance of the Sishugram Trust Board under the Chairmanship of Padmashri Ajay Dutta.
Today the Home houses more than 15 girls who attend the local government school and are taken care of by two attendants, two House Mothers, a case worker and a full time residential Superintendent who all live together as a family, supported by various part-time counsellors, tutors and other personnel.
